Chapter 10: Designing Your Cover

Your yearbook cover is the first thing that people see. It’s like the opening scene of a movie or the cover of your favourite album. So yeah, it’s kind of a big deal. Here’s how to make it awesome (remember though, rules can be broken!):

THINK ABOUT YOUR THEME

Is it bold and edgy? Chill and nostalgic? Futuristic? Your cover should match the mood of your yearbook.

SKETCH IT OUT

Don’t worry if you’re not a pro designer. Start with rough sketches or mood boards. Use tools like Friesens’ DesignIt or Adobe Express to play around with layouts, fonts, and images. You can even use templates if you’re stuck for ideas.

USE HIGH-QUALITY IMAGES

Blurry pics = bad vibes. If you’re using photos, make sure they’re high-res and well-lit. Group shots, school events, or even abstract images can work...just make sure they’re clear and fit the theme.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Too much going on can make your cover look messy. Stick to a few key elements: a strong title, a cool graphic or photo, and maybe a school logo. Leave some breathing room so it doesn’t feel cluttered.

MAKE IT MEANINGFUL

Your cover should tell a story. Maybe it’s a collage of student life, a bold graphic that represents the year, or a quote that sums up the vibe. Whatever you choose, make sure it connects with your classmates.

KNOW YOUR SPECS

Before you send your design off to print, double-check the specs. Friesens offers specialty lamination and finishes. Make sure your design fits the format you’re printing on!
